The Genome Odyssey

In The Genome Odyssey, Dr. Euan Ashley, Stanford professor of medicine and genetics, brings the breakthroughs of precision medicine to vivid life through the real diagnostic journeys of his patients and the tireless efforts of his fellow doctors and scientists as they hunt to prevent, predict, and beat disease.

About

EUAN ASHLEY

I am a medical professor at Stanford University in California where I look after patients with heart disease and study the human genome.

I was born in the West of Scotland. Growing up, I was fascinated by medicine and computers. One of my earliest memories was knowing I wanted to be a doctor. My dad was a local GP and my mom a local midwife and they used to occasionally take me with them on house calls. Aged 12, I got my first computer and started programming, building computer games to impress my friends and a tax package for my Dad’s medical practice. I first learned about genes when my biology teacher gave me a copy of Richard Dawkins’ The Selfish Gene. I was entranced by his beautiful descriptions of the natural world and became fascinated with the impact of genetics on everything around us. I attended medical school at the University of Glasgow and completed a Ph.D. at Oxford University in cardiovascular biology before taking a giant leap across the pond to Stanford University in California where I trained as a cardiologist joining the faculty in 2006.

Today, I consider myself very fortunate to be able to combine all of my passions in my day job at Stanford. I have three kids and spend my spare time trying to keep up with them, playing jazz saxophone, and conducting research on the health benefits of single malt Scotch whisky.

My laboratory is focused on the human genome. We are especially fascinated by the heart — how it develops, adapts, contracts, and fails. At the bench, we explore the genetics of heart disease, from the whole heart all the way down to single cells. We even make little “mini-hearts” from patient stem cells. Our group is one of the most diverse on campus — from mathematicians to molecular biologists, undergraduates to junior faculty, physicists to genetic counselors. We love to work and play together.

I am professor of cardiology and genetics at Stanford. With our amazing team at the Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Disease, I look after patients with genetic heart syndromes, especially heart muscle diseases like cardiomyopathy. We also have a Sports Cardiology clinic where we see athletes with suspected heart problems. Every few months, I spend a few weeks on our cardiac critical care unit looking after patients with heart failure, heart attacks, and other serious cardiovascular conditions. Finally, I help lead the Stanford Center for Undiagnosed Diseases where we try to help patients with rare and undiagnosed disease find answers to their mysterious medical conditions.
